Planet earth is going through a process of change at the moment, and water scarcity is a real problem in many parts of the world. We are using more than we need to be, and need solutions in order to stop the millions of liters wasted each year by carelessness and recklessness. Water purification is also an issue, with un-clean water a major health issue for many people. Scientists have worked for years to make a purifier which is not only good for health, but also good for the planet. They have finally succeeded by using powder activated carbon which makes water fresh, and gives it a taste which pleases. This is contained in the OVOPUR water dispenser, which does not require electricity, and uses gravity to do its magic. Not only does it work, but it also looks good, and is made from porcelain, glass and metal. Bacteria growth within the unit is taken care of with its design, which keeps the water moving and not stagnant in one place. The activated carbon filter has been developed so that contaminants such as chlorine, lead, bacteria and even dirt, cannot pass through and contaminate the fresh and clean water that you want. Using powder activated carbon is not only good for your body; it is good for the environment.

When referring to activated charcoal we are not referring to the type of charcoal you buy to use in your charcoal grill when barbequing. Activated charcoal is a manufactured product which is used in many ways in our everyday life, even if we don’t realize it. This product is made from various types of shells such as nut shells and different types of wood just to mention a few.

You probably have a filter in your air conditioning unit which is more than likely is a carbon activated filter. One of the benefits of this product is the activated carbon absorption factor. Activated carbon can absorb many times it weight of liquid. You might be drinking from an activated carbon water system that purifies your water.

Another way that activated carbon is used is in medical emergencies such as when a child ingests something that is toxic to their body. The activated charcoal when given internally to the child will absorb the toxins from the body.

Activated carbon is used by many businesses and homes. Its ability to absorb odors is the number reason for use at home for pet odors, refrigerator or microwave odors and much more. You may have an air purifier that works by using activated charcoal.

Farmers purchase bulk activated carbon because of its ability to absorb chemicals in the ground. This allows them to purify their fields to promote better growth as well as a healthier product.

There are many, many uses for activated charcoal that it is usually purchased in bulk because of the multiple uses it has.

Water filtration has always been an issue with pools and water treatment plants. Nowadays, consumers often acquire their own personal water filtration systems for their home use. Many of these systems use activated carbon filters in various forms.

Activated Carbon filters are used for drinking water, air purification and capturing toxins from painting, gasoline dispensing or other hazardous waste clean-ups.

Activated carbon is also used on its own to treat poisoning either accidental or deliberate in hospital emergency rooms and medical clinics. When activated carbon is given for poisonings it is given at the rate of 1 gram per kilogram of body weight, the poisoning could be either from poison or a drug overdose. It comes in containers that hold 12.5 to 25 grams that can be mixed with water and is referred to as Activated Charcoal, with brand names such as SuperChar, Actidose and so on. Activated charcoal in tablets is used for indigestion, diarrhea and gas. This charcoal can be used to lower blood alcohol content, as well, by taking it prior to drinking alcoholic beverages.

Powder activated carbon is made by crushing or grinding carbon particles and then passing this product through a sieve. The properly crushed carbon will carry through this sieve with from 95% up to 100% success. Another term for powder activated carbon is PAC. PAC is added to water intake systems, rapid mix basins, gravity filters and other clarifying networks. The fine powder is best used for large filtration applications since the powder will suffer too much head if housed in smaller portions. The size of a powdered activated carbon granule will be 1.0 millimeter with a diameter from 15 mm and .25 mm.

Carbons such as powder activated carbon are produced not only from raw materials such as coal, but also from raw materials such as nutshells or wood. High temperatures from 600 to 900 degrees Centigrade are applied to create the desired physical trait. Also chemical are added to the base material, mostly acids or salts phosphoric acid, potassium hydroxide or zinc chloride are used for this.

Granular activated carbon is a little larger than powder activated carbon and is used for water treatment. The carbons of this size are perfect for absorbing gases and vapors.
