The visible impurities like mud are removed by using mechanical racks as well as screens. Now the role of the activated carbon water treatment comes in the removal of chemical impurities. Coal, wood and coconut shell gives this granular activated carbon by burning them and finally made into granules. The activated carbon in it becomes charged positively to get rid of negative ions like ozone, chloride, fluorides and dissolved organic solutes found in the water through a process called absorption. The routine replacement of granulated activated carbon is a must for continuous purification as it tend to get saturated and loose its power to absorb. Activated carbon is not effective in removing heavy metals. Activated carbon filter also lowers radon level in the water. Radon is nothing but a radio active gas which comes out of break down of uranium found in soil, rock which may contaminate the water. Finally the biological impurities which are viruses, bacteria etc. are removed through UV radiation processes since the conventional boiling process may leave certain biological impurities alive even in high temperatures.
